    The official rules for names in the RWBYverse are as follows (from the twitter account of the creator, himself)

    "1. RWBY characters must be:
    A color, something that sounds like a color, something that means color or something that makes you think of a color.

    2.If that character is on a team, then the first letter of their names must fit in a 4 letter acronym that spells a team name that also must be:
    A color, something that sounds like a color, something that means color or something that makes you think of a color.

    That was the rule that I set whenever they need to come up with a name in RWBY. You can bet there were countless hours in cafes scribbling on the back of napkins while looking up names scrubbing through thesauri and dictionaries, looking up colors in different languages, finding names that could lend meaning to a character in mind. Or researching various histories of names that I wanted and finding a way to give it color.
    Thus all the names in RWBY (minus Ozpin… for some reason…) follow these rules."

    EDIT: For all of you OC Creators…

    You're welcome. Just change the search condition to "Meaning/Definition" and search for whatever you want, be it color, personality trait, etc. This website is a lifesaver.

    What about JNPR or Cardin's team, those are based on historical figures and birds?!

    I've got to agree with @TotemPole on this one. Please explain how the name Oobleck brings a color to mind.

    Goodness knows. These are the rules as stated by Monty. *shrug*

    As for cardinal, it is often used to describe a hue of red.

    Hmmm... This is interesting, it will make naming OC's a tad harder.

    Nora=light? Might be a word I don't know.
    When i read the first post, my first ideas were:
    Nora=orange
    Ren=Red
    But those don't exactly match the character's colors so I think I'm off.

    CRDL: Sky Lark.
    First letter of their names means first letter of either first or last name?

    I think it can be either. Ren goes by his last name, and it is used in JNPR. So I think it works for first OR last names.
